Transparency and trust. When creating a company culture that is successful, you need to give everyone the resources and information across all the things you do. Inspire them to make the decision as if it is their company. That's where DIFUFEE comes in. If you're not familiar with the acronym, listen in. Flywheel talks about that with regards to the decisions you'd make with regards to money or the decisions you'd make with regards to booze in the office. Whatever it might be. The things that we sort of trust people to be grownups about it and keep the company's best interest in mind. Dusty Davidson talks with Mike Volpe about their weekly and quarterly cadence with the entire company physically to realign, to share progress, wins, fails and so that everybody understands where they're going and where they've been.

Flywheel's been around six years. They've gone from three people to 200 worldwide in that time. They understand the importance of tracking progress against ambitious goals and having a level of transparency to drive the velocity of growth.

Atlassian - $1.2B in Revenue reaches a $25B MarketCap

Many companies adhere to well-established business models; Atlassian, founded in Sydney Australia in 2002, decided to do things a little differently. 

Atlassian follows a freemium, self serve model, targeting developers as an entry point to establishing a strong foothold within their customers’ companies. Their spend on customer acquisition is extraordinarily low at 20-25% of revenue, while R&D spend takes almost 50%. These metrics are the opposite of what is expected and witnessed in similar companies, so how are they experiencing the same levels of growth while turning a profit? How is their market cap pushing $25 billion? And how does their “not no-touch, but low touch” sales model work? Mike Volpe and Rebecca Morrison, Lola.com’s CEO and VP of Finance & Operations respectively sat down.

As VP of Finance and Operations, Rebecca Morrison oversees financial reporting and analysis, forecasting, and budget management for Lola.com. Previously, she was VP, Global Finance and Operations at Midaxo, a leader in M&A software, where she oversaw all back-office operations including finance, operations, HR, and admin. Rebecca spent four years at HubSpot holding various roles with the Sales Strategy and Operations team, as well as the Finance organization. Prior to her time at HubSpot, Rebecca spent nine years in various finance and operations roles at EMC and RSA, the Security Division of EMC, including a three-year stint in Singapore. She has a bachelor's degree and master's degree in finance from Bentley University.

MIKE VOLPE:

Mike Volpe is the CEO at Lola.com, the corporate travel SaaS platform that helps companies stop wasting time and start saving money on their business travel program. He has been asked to speak at numerous conferences on sales, marketing, and growth, as well as people operations, leadership, hiring and culture and is a strong advocate for building great teams with a wide range of talent.

Previously Mike was CMO at Cybereason, a cybersecurity SaaS company, where he helped the company increase sales pipeline by 650% in a single year and grow revenue by five times during his tenure. He was also part of the founding team at HubSpot, where he spent eight years growing the company from five people to over 1,000 employees, $175m in revenue, and a successful IPO.

Mike is well-known and active in the Boston SaaS and startup communities as a member of the board of directors of Validity and Privy, and as an angel investor in more than 30 startups. Beautiful Numbers: Zoom’s Story - $150M to 300M

Plenty of companies turn a profit. Many companies experience high growth. Some companies are able to accelerate growth even after they reach massive scale.

But it is the rare company indeed that somehow manages to accomplish all three at once. Only the best of the best are able to remain efficient while growing rapidly at a massive scale.

Zoom is one of those companies. A few months ago, the teleconferencing giant filed its S-1 and the SaaS community could not contain its astonishment at the data. Zoom grew from $150M in revenue to $330M? While being profitable?! With a 9-month payback period!?! Now those are metrics that will make startup founders, executives and investors envious. no such people are Mike Volpe and Rebecca Morrison, Lola.com’s CEO and VP Finance & Operations, respectively. They sat down a few weeks ago to comb through Zoom’s financials and explain what exactly makes the figures so enviable.

Put another way: They geek out over Zoom’s beautiful numbers.

6 minutes: Virtually Rethinking Lunch and Company Meetings

Jessica Meher talking about the success in sending executives to remote offices during those company meetings. You want to give remote sales teams dealing with different time zones a good experience. Posting a conversation on our wiki it kept the conversation going, even if they missed the meeting. Could use a combination. Lola uses Slack. They both say, more emojis on Slack, but deeper questions about the meeting on the wiki. Find what works for you. Donut - roulette of mixing you with other employees in other locations for lunch, happy hour, coffee. Small groups, or just two people. Great way to mix it up. Happy Hour rules are no work talk - just get to know each other. And just how old IS Mike Volpe? He gives away some tells in this clip. "Back in the day..." Think about how much more accepted it is to hang out on some form of video chat such as Facetime, Zoom, and the rest.

5 Minutes: It’s OK to not fix things until they break or are breaking.

Karen Rubin talked about the learning curve of operations with start ups. With startups, it's the 80/20 rule where 20% of the tasks take the most amount of time.

Karen says, "But actually, 40% is good enough in startups on the operational side.
Ask yourself, What part of the business does this impact now and how permanent is the solution that I'm executing on?

For example, you may have a solution that you need to do manually every week for a period of time until you know it's the right solution.

The common mistake is that people ask, "What's the perfect right solution I need to get to?" before they know if they are headed in the right direction.

"Start with the smallest thing you can do, do it for a while, then figure out how to automate after you are sure this is the right path."

Mike Volpe says, "It's OK to do things that you know will break. And it's OK to not fix things until they break or are close to breaking."

I go in and I ask a stupid question - so absurd like, "Why do we do it this way?" And I never get an answer. So I conclude that they are only doing it that way because that's how they've always done it. I ask, "Can we do it better?" and the answer is always a thoughtful, "Yes."

People don't have the mindset of improving a process. Improving a product, improving themselves - yes, but not the process, but that's at the core of getting anywhere. I refer to this as Organizational self-awareness as a higher level concept.

Host, Mike Volpe asked, "What would you recommend- schedule annual or 6-month process for a process audit?"

"5-10 minute review, at minimum, after each cycle - especially when we have success so we can keep doing it that way. Should this be reviewed right now? Example, FYI earned the #2 spot last year in the Golden Kitty Awards for the lifehack category. Our co-founder wrote about this post-mortem - not to whine about 2nd place, but to figure out how to get the 1st place next time. Why did we not get first place? She wrote about the series of events that happened such as being caught off-guard being nominated." That won't happen again.

Culture first and build all the other elements after. How do we want to scale? Think bigger picture. Free soda when there are 200 people is one thing. When you grow to over a 1,000, does it still work or do you have to take it away? You need a vision for your team, your culture, your growth and stay with it in everything that you do. The culture here in Boston is a bit behind Silicon Valley. Here it still means to have a fun person at the front desk who knows how to throw parties, but that doesn't sustain. 4 minutes: Tattletales not welcome - figure it out on your own.

The key point in this clip from Episode 2 is if you come to a CEO with a decision you should make yourself, learn from that feedback. Don't bring complaints about another staff member to the CEO. This is not elementary school. Take your problems with a person to the person and learn how to communicate. It cannot be the CEO's job to intervene in every small issue.
